MBBS in University of Copenhagen For Indian Students

If you're an Indian student interested in pursuing an MBBS-equivalent degree at the University of Copenhagen (KU), here is a detailed guide that covers everything from eligibility to scholarships.

1. Degree Program

In Denmark, the medical program follows a similar structure to most European countries:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medicine (3 years) – Preclinical phase
  • Master’s degree in Medicine (3 years) – Clinical phase

After completing the Master's program, students are qualified to work as medical professionals.

2. Eligibility Requirements

For Indian students, here are the key academic and language requirements:

  • Academic Requirements: You must have completed your 12th standard with a strong background in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB) and achieved high scores. The University of Copenhagen may evaluate your qualifications against Danish upper secondary school equivalence.
  • Entrance Exam: Admission to the medical program is highly competitive. While there may not be a specific entrance exam like NEET (as in India), a strong academic record is required, and interviews or personal statements may be part of the selection process.
  • Language Requirements: The Bachelor's program is taught in Danish, so Indian students need to pass the Danish Language Proficiency Test (Studieprøven) or show other equivalent proof of Danish language skills.
    • There might be some English-language courses, but clinical studies typically require fluency in Danish for interaction with patients.

3. Application Process

  • Application Platform: Applications are submitted via the Optagelse.dk platform.
  • Deadlines: The application deadline for international students is usually March 15th for the program starting in September.
  • Documents Required:
    • Academic transcripts and certificates
    • Proof of Danish language proficiency
    • Personal statement
    • Letters of recommendation (optional but recommended)
    • A resume/CV

4. Fees

  • Tuition Fees: As a non-EU student, the fees for medical programs can be around €10,000 to €17,000 per year.
  • Living Costs: Copenhagen is relatively expensive to live in, with typical student expenses (accommodation, food, transport, etc.) ranging from €1,000 to €1,500 per month.
    • Accommodation: Student housing ranges from DKK 3,500 to DKK 5,500 per month (approx. €470 to €730), depending on the location and type of accommodation.

5. Scholarships

There are a few scholarships available to Indian students:

  • Danish Government Scholarships: These scholarships are offered to highly qualified international students from non-EU countries and can cover either full or partial tuition fees, and sometimes living expenses.
  • University of Copenhagen Excellence Scholarship: Awarded to outstanding students based on merit.
  • Nordplus and Erasmus+ Programs: Though primarily for EU students, Indian students can check for specific opportunities through these networks if available.
  • External Scholarships: Indian students can apply for scholarships from organizations like Orange Tulip Scholarship, Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation, or JN Tata Endowment for overseas studies.

6. Student Loans

Indian students may need to arrange funding through Indian banks, as Denmark does not offer government student loans to non-EU students. Education loans from Indian banks (SBI, HDFC Credila, etc.) typically cover tuition, accommodation, and other expenses.

7. Visa Requirements

  • Indian students will need a student residence permit to study in Denmark.
  • Proof of financial means (showing you can support yourself) is required, along with a letter of acceptance from the University of Copenhagen.
  • After admission, the university helps students with the visa process.

8. Post-Study Opportunities

  • After graduation, you can apply for a post-graduation residence permit to stay in Denmark for up to 6 months to search for a job.
  • Denmark has a shortage of medical professionals, so there may be opportunities for residency or practice in Denmark if you pass the necessary local exams.

9. Language Preparation

  • Since most of the medical programs are taught in Danish, Indian students are strongly advised to start learning Danish early. The University of Copenhagen offers language courses for international students.
